St Mary the Blessed Virgin: Worshipping God, Loving our neighbour

The celebration of your baby's birth is important in any family and many still feel that they would like to have their child baptised (christened). This marks their entry into the family of the church - at the baptism your child becomes a new Christian and parents, godparents and the church promise to do all they can to support his/her growth in the faith and to help to make connections with the Christian community.
If you are an adult wishing to be baptised please fill in the form below and we will get back to you.
We look forward to hearing from you and will be delighted have your baptism with us
How?
Your first contact should be with the parish office, Tel: 01689 842167, and our administrator will take some basic details and will help you to think about available dates. Or Email: stmarytheblessed@gmail.com; You can also send an enquiry via a form below, and we contact you soon after.
When?
Baptism services usually take place in Church at 12 noon on Sundays sometimes at our main 10am service, but do talk things through with our Priest.
Where?
When you make your enquiry, you will be asked whether you live in the parish. If you do not live in St Mary's parish, you will need the agreement of your own parish priest in order for your child to be baptised here.
If you have a past connection with our Parish e.g. you were married or baptised at St Mary’s, it is possible to have a baptism with us and also if you are on St Mary’s electoral role.
Godparents
You will need to think about Godparents. Your child can have three godparents (or more). The tradition is for there to be two godparents of the same sex as the child, and one of the opposite sex. Godparents must be baptised themselves or if not, they can be a ‘Supporter’ to the child.
Preparation
There will be a preparation visit, sometimes in church or the Priest will visit your home. It is essential that we have such a meeting before your child is baptised.
Cost
Baptism is a free gift from God for us all. There is no charge for a Baptism Service, although the congregation will be invited to contribute to the life and work of the church at the end of the service, or you may make a donation.
